The UNU Institute for Natural Resources in Africa (UNU-INRA), with funding from Canada’s International Development Research Centre, is undertaking a three-year project on “Unleashing the Potential of African Rural Economies through Green Growth”. The project aims to provide empirical evidence on how green growth strategies can, inter alia, influence employment, income generation, competitiveness and social inclusion for rural Africa.

Under this project, up to 10 Visiting Scholars and six PhD Interns will be selected each year to spend 3–4 months conducting research at UNU-INRA Headquarters in Accra, Ghana, or at one of the UNU-INRA operating units in Cameroon, Cote d’Ivoire, Namibia, Senegal and Zambia.

The UNU-INRA Visiting Scholars Programme is open to faculty members or researchers at African-based universities and research institutions. Applicants should have a PhD degree in a relevant field of study.

The UNU-INRA PhD Internship Programme is open to African nationals enrolled in a doctoral programme. While there are no restrictions regarding area of study, it must be clearly linked to addressing critical issues related to green growth in rural Africa.

Candidates must be fluent in either English or French.

Successful applicants in both programmes will receive a monthly stipend of approx. US$1,500 (as a contribution towards travel, accommodation, and other expenses).

UNU-INRA will accept applications once each year during the three-year project. The first application deadlines are 15 March 2014 for Visiting Scholars and 15 April 2014 for PhD Interns.
